DH Review: Alienware m7700

"With the case of Alienware’s high end laptops they create systems with the goal of being desktop replacements with no compromises. This review focuses on one such product with a mouth watering specification list comprising a 7800GTX backed up with 2gb of DDR400 ... and did we mention a FX-60 dual core CPU? Please take a moment to clean the drool from your keyboard before you read on...."

Nice review, Stu. In all honestly though, as nice as the AW looks (paintjob) I really don't see the need to get it, since it's just a rebadged Clevo. You can configure a vanilla Clevo or a Sager which should be less

I absolutely pleased that Forgotten Battles was used as a test game..
It has to be one of the most intensive and interesting games I have ever played and worthy of any machine that requires some demanding skills.

Thanx Stewart.

Yeah after I posted I thought the same thing... the desktop LOL.

Hey, I wonder what the desktop did in the game tests? Was it similar?
It is amazing how fast a laptop can be these days..

this laptop is basically a desktop machine, FX60 - 2 gig of ram, 7800GTX, 7200rpm HD. no real compromises apart from the obvious future proofing/upgradability.

Great review, what a machine! For the noise level test, shouldn't some kind of loading be stated? I'm sure it's a bit noisier when you're playing FEAR all tweaked up...

Stuart mentioned that on occasions the noise level could hit 59db - which im sure means full load for extended periods.... but in general use it was hovering around the 53db level.

That is pretty loud actually (since your closer to the laptop on usual than your SLI or Xfire rig).... Oh well, with all that power I don't blame it

yes that is quite loud, however I guess when cramming so much high end hardware into such a confined space certain compromises have to be met

A "standard" Clevo rebadge (does anyone else make "generic" laptops?) would be just as fast, and quite a bit cheaper for the same spec (apart from the looks, but then I'd sooner have a "wolf in sheeps clothing").

FX-60 CPU in a laptop, now that's just crazy, still, I suppose it can do "cool'n'quiet" to powersave, so it's less mad than some models that used an Intel CPU with no real powersaving (my friend has an AJP D480V = another Clevo, with a 3.2GHz desktop P4).

I think everyone knows that. however thats not the reason why people buy alienware, same with BMW, ferrari. et al.

Nice review. I also like those Alienware computers. They are great but a bit pricy tho. Still a great product
