Remember that very soon yahoo messenger and msn messenger will be linked and able to talk to each other. This makes over 3/4 of instant messagers on one system and the rest on time-to-die aol instant messenger.

Stop supporting a noisy ad, no offline messaging, spambot riddled protocol, and join the new wave of instant messaging.

You can read more of my opinion on the messenger wars at my blog:

And you can download the latest yahoo messenger beta (with built in pc-to-pc calling like skype) here:

Yahoo and MSN are starting to look very similar. I think that's because when they join forces, they don't want one to look significantly more attractive than the other. For example, the latest yahoo beta has added an ad bar to the bottom. But it's not making any noise so we're still magnitudes better than aol. Plus it's at the bottom of the window where there isn't any content so you can just move the window and make the add be behind your taskbar or something :P

My reason for pimping yahoo instead of msn is that there's a better chance you're already using a yahoo service and it will link nicely with the messenger. Plus when you tell people to use something from microsoft you get a hand in the face.

I use miranda, so I can run all the protocols I want in one neat little window and never see an ad.

Yeah I tried miranda for a while, it was nice but not updated enough for my tastes. Same problem I had with trillian. Plus I'm really starting to get into extra features like pc-to-pc calling and image sharing and yahoo music sharing, and the third party clients never support more than the basic text sending

In the US yahoo is used but trust me, MSN is much more used outside...

Master Shake is on a distinguished road

I love how AIM leaves a service running even after you close it and how it tries to install all kinds of crap... Love it. Windows Messenger Beta is pretty good though.

It's been interesting to watch what my friends do during my transition to yahoo. The ones who want to talk to me will get yahoo. That may be either the client or some third party tool like trillian. As more and more people I know join up to talk to me, my friends start talking to THEM on yahoo instead of on aim. Soon, everyone is doing much more of their communication on yahoo. It's not at the point yet where they're ready to drop their aim friends cold turkey, but I think it will happen some day.

It just shows people's readiness to give up AIM. I think everyone who uses it is saying the same thing: "I hate AIM but all my friends are using it". People don't realize that if you all just move, you'll all be happier. I wonder what sort of event could convince a ton of people to download a different messenger in a short time.
