Intel vs. AMD - The Main Verdict

Intel has been struggling as of late to rival AMD. It's just a battle of who wants it more and AMD has definitely proved that they are a stronger chip. Is it true? Who is better in the long run? Surely it could come down to opinions, since certain people live by there processor's company, but the facts never lie.

Evaluating the difference between the two processor companies isn’t easy, but you’d have to start with gaming performance, application loading times, and compression. If you’re really into processors then you’ll go by which you trust more. Intel obviously wins the name game over AMD since well its Intel. AMD has improved a lot over the years and while there reputation for overheating isn’t as “talked” about as it used to be, Intel can find themselves hunting in dangerous waters when AMD comes to town with a new processor.

AMD has made the largest technilogical jump.

Intel runs certain applications well.
AMD runs certain applications well.

NEITHER of them are in the same category so WHY do people STILL want to try comparing them? It would be better to compare an Apple to an Orange.

Not really. They are so often compared because they are both competing for share in the same cpu market: x86. You'd be correct, though, if you were comparing Itanium to Athlon--that'd definitely be an "apple to oranges" comparison...

Thier architectures aren't even the same - they may be able to do the same functions but one is specifically designed for a certain task that it looks biased when reading reports such as these.

Like comparing 2 pickup trucks - one a gasoline powered (less torque, more horsepower) and one diesel powered (more torque, less horsepower). They're still internal combustion engines that run on liquid fuelent, but they are very different from each other.

Anywho, I just buy what works for my needs and that's how I present my school-of-thought when folks ask for my recommendation.

Intel is "the name". They didn't gain that reputation for nothing.

Intel chips last FOREVER. [I still get 486 machines in at work sometimes..I NEVER see anything even remotely that old from AMD that isn't dead]

Intel does better for professional applications [encoding, transcoding, digital editing, compression, etc] and will always have that selling point, until AMD can push out the raw nubmers and get an architecture instruction set to best SSE.

AMD is picking up the gaming and multimedia market, which si smart, but won't carry them for as long as intel's business market will

sure there are some AMD's around judas, i won't doubt that...but percentage wise, for every old AMD i bet there's 10 old intels.

i stiil have a p3 500e & a 1100 'tualatin'(wich was actually a kickass cpu in its time)

thoroughbred 1800+ is the oldest AMD I have...I have a stack of 486 and 386 machines [old dell optiplex's] in my friend's attic, as well as SOMEWHERE i think i still have a slot load Pentium II 233MHz.

naa.. still sticking with your off topicigness...

The major problem being there isn't the fact that AMDs burnt out.... it's the fact that there simply wasn't the coverage..

i mean nearly every single and all machines were intel.... i don't think i recall ever seeing even 1 amd machine out of dozens sitting on a shelf for purchase.... And if i recall right, most of all amd system were typically custom built, or upgraded from intels chips.. (when they both works on the same chipsets and sockets)

I know someone with an AMD chip i've never seen before... old as dirt.... only now bought a new computer from me and as far as i know, he's happy as hell.

The is a generalization. If you really knew the truth to this you would know that you're wrong. Read some reviews.

highly agree..

necrosis and i both know what kind of numbers an AMD cpu can crunch. I myself have used a Dual Core Intel similare to that of my 4400+ and frankly, it's a laugh in comparison... (only thing is the price difference, and my 4400+ is worth every penny more)

Which is what nforcer in a round about way was saying.

Single Core AMD's not compare to Intel for what PJ talks about.

However, it shifts when you're talking currently available dual core processors.

Of course things get weird with the Intel Core Duo but that isn't a pratical solution. Every thing changes with the Conroe. I wish they would release the damn thing. I'd upgrade right now.
