Where to draw line when street ads give you a ring
Source: IHT
__________ PARIS - Sometime in the next few weeks, French billboards will be able to speak to your mobile phone - but only with your permission. People with certain kinds of phones who download a special software program and say they want to participate will receive digital advertising when the phone is near the billboards. It is the latest twist in the budding niche of mobile marketing, wherein the cellphone becomes a conduit not just for communications but also for commerce. |

Not me, but I have to tell ya, I've seen some really creative billboards. For instance, in Toronto there are a bunch of the "Lord of the Rings" musical billboards around (there are 2 on the Yonge line platforms at Yonge & Bloor) that have an active bluetooth download for a Lord of the Rings ringtone. I remember my friend telling me about the interactive soccer billboard/floor display when he was in Sydney last year. The floor display allowed you to kick around a virtual soccer ball on a field that was branded with an Adidas logo.
Done right, they can accomplish some neat & cool things, but the idea in the above posting is more about "accepting" push ads. I sure as hell don't want my phone going off, thinking that I have a phone call, just to find out I got spammed instead. That would piss me off royally. |

What if, by downloading and installing the program, your phone bill was less money each month?
