For a while, it looked like Sony had an unbeatable console in the Playstation 3. At their E3 2005 press conference last year, they first showed off the console along with a few tech demos, a playable early version of Unreal Tournament 2007, and a number of game concept videos. Everyone who attended that conference thought that the PS3 would easily be the champion of the next-gen console wars, despite the year head start of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the low price and low development costs of Nintendo's Revolution.

That is rubbish. 600USD is not much for what you're getting in the first place. PC users pay that much for the video-card alone to play similar games (and even those can't run all games at 1920x1080 resolution).
And bashing on lack of glamorous titles? Resistance and Heavenly Sword are only 'standard fare'? In which world?

Forget that- 600 freaking bucks!!?!? Are they on crack? For something that will be out dated in 2 years by the PC... what's up with 100 extra bucks for 40 gigs? That's a damn expensive HD.. Well, I'll never play GT5, unless I win the lottery. I'll spend someone else's money for it maybe, but not my own.

No for a 100 bucks you get HDMI, Wifi, 40gb and all... Which makes the 499 PS3 sound like a ripoff (which it is)

Hey, whatever you like in other systems I'm sure sony will make a low-quality rip off and tack it onto their ps3. Who wouldn't want an expensive machine that does what the other two do, but worse?

Microsoft's got an awesome campaign for this one: buy a wii and an xbox360 for less money than a ps3.

Do the math, for the cost of the ps3 console ALONE you could get a wii, 4 games, and some controllers (assuming the wii is 250 and games are 50 USD). I bet you could easily name 4 games you want on the wii. What do you really HAVE to play on the ps3? Nothing, probably. But after a 600 dollar price tag, I bet you'll find some games that you like purely to justify your 600 dollar purchase.

First of all, here are teh few things PS3 has got going for it....

True HD experience (gotta dish out 600 bucks but tis true hd!)
A great controller with some form of innovation (nothing basic like xbox but nothing to extreme like wii)
Solid games coming out (UT2007? MGS? GT5? etc...)
Solid loving public + full backwards compat

Things not going for it? well price, availibity which is ONLY 2million (but already better than M$) and all... We'll see! Anyways, I'm gonna be moving to my own place and I'll want the best system to reduce all of my costs. Wii is out... Xbox with HDdvd or PS3? hmmmmm

Yeah for people with true HD TV's that want to take FULL advantage.. I guess this will be the console for them. Also if you have the cash for a nice big HDTV, you probably can afford a PS3..

Another thing is- I wonder if that new G25 wheel is going to be marketed for GT5? That thing is pretty sweet- 300 dollars on it's own.. (I plan on getting one) but if GT5 is really good, and supports that wheel. that will be a sweet setup for a lot of people who depend on a console for gaming. Personally I have outgrown all console race games- to me they are all "arcadish" in their physics, even GT series.. but they can still be fun.

But didn't M$ lose money on each 360 sold or still lose money on them until some future date? Maybe Sony would need to do the same to be competitive?

i can careless if the ps3 is more of an entertaiment system. I'll only buy it for the games tbh. The lineup of games aren't very promising and i do somewhat agree that the xbox360 will steal allot of ps3's success this time around.
