Diabetics get high-tech help to track sugar
Source: USA Today
__________ Chris Jarvis, 25, is a serious amateur athlete who has had diabetes since he was 14. He believes he owes it to his team and to himself to stay physically fit, and that means keeping tight control of his blood sugar levels. "I let my team down if I have to stop to get my blood sugar back in order," he says. When he was training for the 2004 Athens Olympics as a member of the Canadian rowing team, he tested his blood 20 times a day. But last month, when he ran the Boston Marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes, that was not a concern. Jarvis wore a new device that tests his blood sugar levels continuously and provides a stream of information that allows him to know when and how much insulin he needs. It shows whether his glucose level is rising or falling, and gives a picture of how fluctuations occur around the clock. |
