DH Review: AMD 5000+/ FX62 / MSI K9N SLI PLAT

Read the review here
______________

Today AMD is launching a whole host of new CPU’s. This is a launch with a difference though as it is not just another speed bump or increase in cache. Instead AMD is launching a range of CPU’s which run on a new socket, AM2 and feature support for DDR2.

We’ve been lucky enough to receive samples of the two top end processors, the X2 5000+ and the FX-62. How do these two new processors stack up against the existing models on the market? Lets find out as we compare them to the Socket 939 FX-60 and Intel Pentium 955 Extreme Edition…

Awesome review guys. Having a FX-62 would be a killer system. So, what's the ETA for AM2?

the same review on HardOCP. your benchmarks between these new AMD processors and the Intel 955 EE are so close that I doubt it. The Intel 955 EE on some benchmarks even surpassed AMD's FX 62... heh...

btw, Zardon, why didn't you wait for these new AMD processors or even conroe before you built a new system?

I plan to do some overclocking later in the week, we just ran out of time for this article.

Well it aint bad, but it aint something sptacular and as everybody expects, AM2 is going to have a hard time against Conroe, unless they want to battle on price and maybe OC, but i doubt it they can battle Conroe on OC, which allready has hitted 4 Ghz :X

There is always something faster coming along... if we all spent our time waiting on the latest and greatest we'd never buy anything...

Thats true, but it's so close and such a big update (and very promising if you take a look at the pre-benchmarks), that i would wait the 5-6 weeks to see whats comming.

If Conroe were 4-5 months away, i wouldn't wait either if buying a new PC.

The EE 965 I have actually surpasses the FX62 on quite a few benchmarks that stuart posted even at stock.... but they are slightly different base systems.

Well I dont think its a fair comparison to compare an extreme edition at 4.5ghz against a FX62 at 2.8ghz (I know you didnt mean that, but its a point I need to make!), but it is obviously substantially faster in most results - those of you who have been venturing into our hardware forums know, the 965EE at 4.5ghz scores around 65,000/85,000 for example in sandra multimedia test and completes our DH photoshop bench in around 135 seconds which is a good 26 seconds FASTER than a stock FX62 in the test system. I dont know if stuart has had a chance yet to overclock the FX62 with the limited time we have had to get this article up but if its not hitting more than 3.1-3.2ghz id fancy the 965EE's chances as at stock it wins quite a few of them - overclocking potential is huge with the fab process too.

Also you will notice in the quake4 results in the review that the 955EE gets the highest score, most assuredly gained by the 2 core and 2HT benefits in windows, same would apply for CPU usage playing back high definition files. I saw a 1080p clip taking around 30% cpu time with an FX60, the EE was around 10%. Unfortunately again stuart didnt have time to run this particular (and great real world) test, but I wouldnt expect the FX62 to be any better than 20%...

excellent review

interesting to see them venturing back to a 940 pin socket, and yet redesigning it altogether....

Socket 940....toast
Socket 939....toast
Socket AM2 [940 round II]....the latest and greatest!
