NTL implies 1GB/day broadband cap
NTL has published a new user policy which defines a "normal" data download cap of 1GB/day.
Here is the spiel ntl: home's broadband and dial-up services are intended for normal recreational or educational use by individuals and families and our pricing and network architecture have been designed accordingly. Customers who use the services more heavily than a normal home user will reduce the performance of the network for other customers. "Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day). Everybody! - downgrade to 128k - and insist they do not imposed a minimum term or notice since they changed the conditions. They also cut some of the binary newsgroups, amid speculation that they may later charge extra for a full newsgroup feed after further cuts. And if you use sharing or run a server, they will bitch about upload bandwith, though that IS more harmful to the system than download - I believe someone was left wit a limit of 300Mb/day upload - though I can't see that staying if they consider 1Gb download too much. But if you take a small step backward, it seems they are only targeting those who CONSISTENTLY exceed 1Gb/day At 600k, that means about 4 hours of continuous full load, or 9 hours of a 256k high quality radio stream. They are going to have very few takers for the 1 Megabit service though, as unless you NEED an instantaneous bandwidth greater than 600k, it's pointless. |

I urge everyone who uses this service to email the company stating your feelings about this and making sure they know if this is enforced they will lose your custom. and to fill in the online petitions.
having the 1mbit line means you could theoretically only download for just over 2 hours a day at the maximum rate. its a total rip off and its not acceptable. make your voice heard, its important. ive already emailed them quite indepth about this. if they get away with this it will have a dramatic impact on the whole broadband scene in the UK and will have a far reaching dramatic effect in general. if they offer a service and make you pay for it they should allow for the use of it 24/7 at the full transfer rate. Not for 1/12 of the day. Quote:
