Googlespotting has become a popular spectator sport, ever since the company went public and started launching new software and services left and right. While Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin insist that they only give the green light to strategically important projects, sometimes it is a bit difficult to figure out exactly where that strategy lies.
Google Earth was very cool, but apart from duplicating NASA's WorldWind software, how did it help the company's strategic position? And while free programs like
SketchUp and
GTalk are neat ideas, it's not entirely clear how they add to the bottom line. Then again, Page and Brin are billionaires with PhDs (well, technically Page is still "on leave" from the PhD program at Stanford), so they must have some idea about what they are doing.
