AMD-ATI Merger Looks Likely

Source: Forbes
___________
Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.

"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."

Walia based his prediction on recent checks in the PC food chain. RBC has an "outperform" rating and $23 price target on ATI, and no rating on AMD. The firm expects ATI to report fiscal 2007 earnings per share of $1.06.

Does ATI own any fabs? Maybe this is one reason for it?

wtf...... I never heard about this! crazy move since AMD has closer links to nvidia IMO. well whatever works, as long as I get quality ATI cards and AMD keeps growing I will be happy. I like both companies

Unless ATI makes a Vid card with built in AMD processor I think this is a bad idea!

Why would they build a graphics card with an AMD processo when the GPU's have far more transistors then any CPU out to-date?

i really doubt this will happen. amd is quite capable of designing their own chipsets & have done a good job when thet did it. better than ati as far as desktos go imo.
i have always said one of amds bigest downfalls is the m not having better qa as far as chipsets for their cpus go. ati is not the answer to that.
cant see how this would be costeffective for amd either. i think all/most of atis actuall production is done in asian foundries. what would they be getting in return for their $$ - that they need? think this is some stock price manipulation.

Koptor is on a distinguished road

I doubt it'll happen...but being an ATI and AMD fanboy, it'd be pretty damn good

One other thing I was thinking. What if AMD decided to put a GPU on the CPU like they did with the memory controller??? There are lots of things one can ponder over.

This is just some analyst's "pipe dream"! He thinks that CPU companies should not focus on just CPUs. And he ignores the "market dynamics and synergy" that is already in place. A merger of these two companies would hurt both, but this guy can't see it. Ignore this RUMOR!!! In a month no one will remember about this stupidity...
