500 Hour Test of Tomorrow's Windows "Vista" @ THG

Read More / Source: THG
__________
Many publications don't take the time or trouble to look behind the scenes when writing about new operating systems or other software. Users who specialize in software matters can easily ascertain this for themselves, simply by digging into any of a number of print magazines that have made Windows Vista their topic of late. It's more like they're trolling for readers, rather than really digging into the subject matter. Many of these stories consist of only a couple of pages of text and a handful of screenshots, while remaining light on real information, investigation and analysis.

All that self indulgence about how amazing they are and the thorough testing they did across 500 hours and the conclusion starts with:

" Microsofts new Vista is surprisingly entertaining. The new look of the operating system is good, and lets it outshine its Linux and Mac OS competitors. One notices repeatedly while working with this software that Microsoft scoped out its competition very carefully."

maybe they should have spent some of that 500 hours playing with macosX and some linux distros to actually see vista consumes twice the memory and runs at half the speed.

Wonderful - all the pages are like 3 paragraphs, and 6 of those pages are on games like minesweeper...

This is a 3 to 4 pages article stretched to 40 pages just for the extra hits + ad revenue. Plus the guy obviously doesn't have a clue of alternative OSes, judging by his comments. I wouldn't bother with it, I have better things to do with my time.

I wouldnt mind so much but it is the arrogance of the introduction that really irks me, especially when the self indulgence certainly has not produced an article of any great merit on a technical level. There is nothing to warrant 500 hours of testing either, unless it took him 490 of those to test minesweeper......

My thoughts exactly! Plus IE and Windows Explorer, programs that I hardly ever open.

And while the guy insists on comparing Vista with XP, I cannot help but notice nothing has changed since Win2000 actually.

I dread the day we'll be force to use that
