AMD counters Intel's Conroe with dual-socket gaming platform
Source: TG Daily
__________ Sunnyvale (CA) - AMD used a meeting with the press and analysts to provide some long-term information about its product strategy. Part of the roadmap is an answer to Intel's flagship processor Core 2 Extreme: AMD will launch a new platform with two sockets for two dual-core processors, handing gamers four physical cores. In case you haven't read it at TG Daily before: 2006 will be recognized as one of the few years so far where fierce competition between AMD and Intel sparks one of the most interesting years for anyone who uses computers for more than preparing tax reports. Just yesterday, Intel demonstrated its Core 2 Extreme running at 2.93 GHz and lots of headroom for performance increases that are likely to pave the way into a whole new world of gaming and multimedia experience. |

you know.. i asked these questions and sent emails about this kinda setup quite often for quite awhile...
i'm serprised they never thought of this before really.. and to add, when are they going to provide dual onboard audio (the full HD audio compliment surround sound abilities, along with a basic stereo headset/mic)

just add a cheap 2.0 soundcard, that'll do the job but this does sound VERY interesting indeed

I really hope things will go the heavily optimized multi thread / SMP road in the near future, because this seems as its AMD's only weapon against an extremely effecient intel platform(finally after 4years or so of the worse effecient core in history).
That being said, I hope this 4x4 thing works out for AMD , otherwise if games continue the way they are designed now...those extra 3 cores wont do anything for us performance wise. Otherwise, I sincerely hope AMD will develop a once again revolutionizing architecture...like they did a few years back. GO AMD! I have to admit Im an AMD fanboy...not extreme because I usually go with whatever company cooks out the best at any given point in time. P.S. 4 cores just sound uber as hell though =) |

and yes the OS will be deeply multi threaded and game will be dual core optimized if not multi threaded....... I doub AMD is scared but intel finally came out with an "competeing" in thier market product surely has thier attention....

well its 2x2 and labeled 4x4 for some reason from amd as the article says.
but I said 4cores total cuz thats what will initially be, anyhow...lets hope your right and my dreams are right that the world will be changing to a heavily multi threaded platform and games being able to take advantage SIGNIFICANTLY from multiple cores. not this 2-5% increase in speed we see now. more like 20-50% increase in performance from a processor thats "2x" more powerful. |

This would be where HTT shines.
But who can imagine two quality coolers in the same system? Let alone airflow... |

depends on the motherboard design, imo, anything larger then a xp-90 is starting to get outa hand (although a xp-120 is pretty steller, it's FREAKING HUGE beyond reason)
reguardless, it'll have to be designed properly and i could easily see that putting the 2 cpu's (one above the other) as close to the rear as possible, that would could still sustain excellent cooling and aflow (keeping fresh air for the cpus as well) But i seriously think that a Full Tower case is gonna be needed to really fit them in decently.

Um, if it's not going to be any cheaper compared to an Opteron solution..what is the point?

maybe it be one great fan cooler/heatsink LOL. doesnt have to be one fan/heatsink for each core. but yea. its gonna be huge i think

also don't forget , AMd is also working on "reverese hyperthreading" basically
make two 2.4 ghz coresact like a single core 4.8 ghz amd (like what a 10ghz intel (non conroe) would be). So all all curent apps would be able to run insanley faster...

sounds like Opteron/Xeon systems for gamers to me
![]() wait....Asus did that a while ago when they put 875P chipsets on 604 Socket intel boards ![]() does sound interesting though...hooray price war
