Sony PS3 exec: "We do not need the PC"

Source: TG Daily
__________
Phil Harrison, Sony's increasingly high profile president of SCE Worldwide Studios, has given an interview to German magazine Der Spiegel, in which he has again discussed the concept of the PlayStation 3 as a computer, and vigorously denied that the PlayStation 3's new motion sensing controller was influenced by Nintendo's Wii console.

Harrison suggested that the use of the Linux operation system, hard drive and the Cell processor would lessen the importance of the PC as a home media center.

And we're none of us that bothered by upgrading, or personalising it................................................ . blah blah blah

sony want to pull that great big conglomerate head of their's out of their arse

Uh, right. Sorry, but I do way too many things on my computer that I find hard to believe a console can adequately replace all of them. I haven't spent all this time customizing my system to my tastes and needs just to throw it out and replace it with the PS3, and I'm sure a lot of computer owners would heartily agree.

Actually the controllers design derivved from various other controllers.. i beleive nintendo was the first to full incorporate it though.. and i mean that was quite a while ago they did that.

I think sony loves to gander over ones shoulder at all the inventions being made then design it and call it there own and blindly look away from any proof that says otherwise.

Sony = joke

Oh come on, for all the people who got crap PCs and can't play games, they'd love to get one system that can do all and never need to be upgraded... It's not as dumb as it sounds.

Hmmm...yeah, that is kind of a point... But it still is reinventing the wheel. I hope someone has patent on PCs and now that Sony is trying to push in on PC market, they'll get shut out of the business

ok that was only a dream... But I still hate Sony. Knocking off other companies and then forcing ppl to buy their expensive stuff, not even to mention about distributing malicious software and other that kind of crap. Sony really is gonna shoot herself, but not into the foot but i think they're gonna drive bullet throught their brains....BANKRUPCY!!!!!!!!

Well we should make an article that says: "Who needs the PS3??"

I think that Microsoft has a point when they say that Sony did not have to include the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3. That alone would bring the price down to an acceptable level. Sony could have easliy made the Blu-Ray an add-on instead of forcing people to adopt the technology. Personally, I don't see a need for Blu-Ray. There are no games that fill up a DVD9 at this point so I am betting that regular DVD technology still has a lot of life in it.

Here is what I see.

Wii: $250.00
360: $299.00-$399.00
PS3: $499.00-$599.00

Look at the prices. Even Japan thinks that the PS3 is too expensive. (That says a lot) Japan also seems to be liking the Wii. I definitely know what system I will be going with.

With the PS3 going to be REAL HD, that DVD is already too small... COme on, games on the PS2 already push it onto the limit.

I find M$ did the mistake of not taking HDDVD...

That's not true. I just loaded MGS3 and its on a DVD5. Sitting at 4.22GB. DVD5 holds 4.7GB. DVD9 8.5GB. I would hardly say that they are pushing the limits of the DVD technology. They still have some time left before they reach capacity and could have easily left the Blu-Ray out and made it an add-on. Compression technologies are, also, always improving which further supports the statement that DVD technology limits have not been reached.

All I know for sure is that when Wii comes out. I will trade in my GC and get the Wii.

Finally, it seems I was completely right about PS3 and Sony. Glad some of you realize that now.

thats good news ..
i really hope the wii succeeds more and more ..
i think its like new blood ..
like .. creative making a GPU that can really stick it to ATI and nVIDIA , which is sthg in our favour in terms of performance , and may be price also , as in this case

plus it lifts the minds of ppl from the state of " the more expensive the better " that is really in control for some time now

I've lost far too much repsect for Sony prior to this little story.
They've surely pushed me behond the reach of potential customer.

PC?!... I say screw it, i'm going back to my atari 2600 for all my entertainment needs.
Who needs the latest and greatest when they have "Adventure"!

PS3 is not going for real HD! It seems that you've forgot that the cheaper PS3 doesn't support HDMI and is more like overhyped PS2, than PS3. And that expensive one is just too expensive...

Sony isn't forcing anything on you. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Some of you guys sound like Sony is a drug dealer pushing drugs to kids. Which, Sony is far from as with all the other game companies. I hope the Wii does succeed. I've been a Nintendo fan since I was a kid even when they have made bad choices.

If it were only this simple..
I think you may recall the nice gift Sony gave to those who purchased their music CDs a little while back.
Well i'm sure the customer base simply didn't have the choice to not buy it if they didn't like it.
They bought CDs (that they liked) out of good faith with their money, only to find out afterwards what Sony had planted in their PC.
No they are not drug pushers, but they do beleive in putting your personal information & security at risk.

Fortunatly not all companies are this crooked.

erm.. sandok.. seriously, PC for internet and basic use.... uber cheap.... you can get a pretty decent machine for the entire price of a PS3....

ATM, PS3 has absalutely no advantages in the computer area. And you can't justify the price for the use of next gen gaming, as always, next gen gaming will be 10 generations old by the time they start fiddling with the "PS4"..

Though i have no doubt someones going to try and convert the sucker into a computer right off the hop.

I'm not saying that I said is true... It's just the way Sony must be thinking.... And they aren't that wrong cuz for 700$, you barely get a good PC at all... It's the bottom rung and if you can a game with AA and AF with decent frames at that price...

The PS3 is a very powerful PC for little and usually everyone owns a TV so it's quite easy to make the jump. I'm not saying I agree with this, but that's what Sony is thinking

No no, i'm not saying it's stupid that sony intergrating something that is quite useful into there system. I just kinda find it funny that a company that doesn't specialize in the internet or computer world with a console, would make the rash desicion that someone wouldn't need a PC at all with the PS3 sitting next to chair..

Browsing the net is one thing, but when it gets down to the details of various website that need various plugins and various other things that will require updates.. things get a little shady on how that'll all work and how sony will implement a way to manage that.

And that's just limited to specific browsing. Reguardless of what anyone does, every person i've setup a machine for has always wanted "more".. in some for or matter, and they get quite disapointed when that more comes at a hefty price. Specially if it requires replaceing majority of the vital parts.

It's always first:

"All i want is email and to surf the net"...

but it quickly expands from that on and when it's not available, they get a little ticked all i'm saying.
