Pioneer's BDR-101A Blu-ray Burner @ ExtremeTech
Review: ExtremeTech
_______________ After a longer-than-expected gestation period, Pioneer is now shipping the BDR-101A Blu-ray recorder for the PC. Before we dive into the specs and performance testing, let's take a quick look at Blu-ray, what it is, and what it's not. Blu-ray Disc is an optical storage medium with capacities of 25GB (single layer) and 50GB (double layer). The standard was jointly developed by members of the Blu-ray Disc Association, though Sony and Philips were the chief technology drivers in the organization. The Blu-ray Disc Association now consists of some 170 companies, including hardware, software and media manufacturers. |

"Interestingly, the BDR-101A neither burns nor reads CD media of any type. So if you still need CD burning or reading capability, you'll need an additional drive. Also, the drive is a parallel ATA (ATAPI) drive, instead of a Serial ATA interface."
Lame and lame ![]() First generation, media to expensive and drive to expensive, no thanks I'm waiting ![]() |

CD's...who'd still use them when ya got Flash drives? Besides, many of us kept our floppy AND ZIP drives when CDR's came out...it'll be a while before the 'lack of ability to burn CD's" will pose a problem.
However, its a good thing to note. |
