French digital music law heads for vote

PARIS - French legislators on Thursday agreed to final wording of a potentially precedent-setting law that could see Apple Computer license its iTunes song format to rivals.

The text, woven together from divergent versions passed earlier this year by the two chambers of the French legislature, is scheduled for a final vote without debate next week by the Senate and National Assembly.

Among the most controversial provisions in the law is a reduction of penalties for downloading music to the judicial equivalent of a parking ticket.
