SAN JOSE, Calif. Jul 3, 2006 (AP)— Strong demand for cell phones and other consumer electronics drove a 9.4 percent increase in global chip sales in May, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Monday.

Total sales for the month were $19.7 billion, up from $18.1 billion last year.
