The hard disk technology, parallel ATA (PATA), was the best of it’s time, back to 15 years ago. The transfer rate of the time was just merely 3.3MB/sec only. That was like the speed of 22X CD-ROM. As hard disk developers continue to strive much faster and reliable design, it has finally reached its maximum potential speed, which was 133MB/sec currently. Besides, other factor also contributes to the limitation of the parallel ATA design. Among of the factors are higher pin count, high voltage requirement, inadequate cabling and non-scalable performance. In order to solve the problem, Seagate, Silicon Image as well as Intel has worked closely to bring the next best interface technology for the hard drive, which was the Serial ATA (SATA).
