The White House on Tuesday withdrew its request for $160.5 million to fund a promised free credit monitoring service for veterans whose names and personal information was on a stolen laptop.

Rod Portman, the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), canceled the June request in a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), the Associated Press reported Tuesday afternoon.

The money isn't needed, Portman told the Speaker, because the laptop has been recovered and the FBI has concluded that there was little chance the data on it had been accessed.
