AMD and ATI to ask shareholders for merger approval
Read More/Source: The INQ
_______________ According to an extraordinarily reliable source, AMD and ATI will on Monday pitch their shareholders with the proposition that the two companies merge. It's an interesting idea - AMD doesn't quite have the shekels in the bank to buy ATI outright. The deal, subject to shareholder approval, may still founder. |

If true, it's gonna be very interesting. Can't say I think it's gonna be a good idea, and will certainly change the chipset landscape! Let's see what Monday brings...

From the INQ, not exactly a trustworthy and reliable source.
I'd say AMD + ATI would be a bad thing, as the chipset of choice for AMD processors is normally Nvidia. I guess if Intel can make chipsets and processors, maybe an AMD + chipset tie-up would work, but ATI would be last on my list (Nvidia first, VIA second, even SiS next). Cant even remember seeing any ATI chipset for AMD, actually?

I think ATI could use a changing of staff, it would be good for us all.

what's the point of having a higher benchmark results if the system itself is either unstable or have some pretty obvious flaws that nvidia can't seem to fix.

I have three boards here all with ATI chipsets. Acually SiS is a joke, Via is alright but always a bit sub par to the other two ATI & Nvidia. Nothing wrong with ATI chipsets..... thericlly this would place a splint between nvidia and AMD cpu's , their chipsets would be sub par. AS in no more hand holding from AMD, as nv would be a competitor. That and the intel chipset and board would mean profit even if intels doing better.... Who will win? AMD ATI Who will lose from this deal? nvidia / uli intel via sis but then again I woudn't base much considering the source

GlobeandMail.com has the story now. Personally dunno if that makes it more or less believable, but it's there.

Here is another and there seem to be a slew of stories out now.... I think they really missed out not buying Uli
here is the Reuters news article http://today.reuters.com/investing/...MD-UPDATE-2.XML From AMDzone It used to be AMD was going out of business, or IBM was buying them, and then it was Nvidia was going to buy them when they were around $3. Now there are a ton of stories about AMD's rumored buy of ATI. Will this be the ultimate A team?National Post Extremetech Mercury News Globe and Mail The Globe and Mail has this to say. The board of directors at AMD, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., have approved a takeover offer, according to an investment banker familiar with the talks. Other sources in the financial industry said AMD executives have been spotted at ATI's Markham, Ont., head office. So this is the first semi concrete sounding evidence so far. Will it happen? If so the repurcussions for the enthusiast market could be dire.

I'm just as surprised as the people at GBX that this is actually true.
