Hewlett-Packard (HP), in response to questions raised by Taiwan-based makers of optical disc drives (ODD) regarding the global adoption of its LightScribe direct disc labeling technology, recently claimed it has won 25 new licensees, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and TEAC, raising the total number of licensees to above 70, according to industry sources in Taiwan. LightScribe allows users to directly burn a label onto specially coated DVD discs
Licensees include international PC vendors, OEM and own-brand makers of ODDs and optical discs as well as software developers, HP was quoted by the sources as saying. Many ODD manufacturers in Taiwan indicated that HP's promotion of LightScribe in Taiwan has not gone smoothly thereby prompting HP to offer reduced royalty rates to local makers recently.
According to Japan-based Techno Systems Research (TSR), the cumulative global shipment volume of LightScribe DVD burners exceeds 12 million units and that of LightScribe CD-R and DVD+R discs is more than 90 million discs. Currently, 10% of global DVD burner shipments are for units with LightScribe technology, TSR pointed out.
