Mobile handset and Mobile handset and Internet tablet maker Nokia has
snapped up digital music vendor Loudeye in a surprising transaction. For $60 million, Nokia gets its feet into the online music business by buying a company that is perhaps better known by the name of one of its subsidiaries, OD2 Services.
In the days before the iTunes Music Store crossed the Atlantic, OD2 was one of the first online music distributors in Europe. Finding itself in an increasingly competitive environment for music sales, the company changed focus slightly and begun selling all-in-one music stores for other companies to rebrand. It provides the infrastructure, inventory, and front end for anyone who wants to take a plunge in the shallow end of the digital music pool.
