Creative trims loss, targets year-end profit

Creative Technology, the maker of Nomad and Zen digital-music players, posted a narrower quarterly loss as it struggled in a competitive market dominated by Apple Computer's iPod.

Singapore-based Creative said it is targeting gross margins of at least 20 percent by the end of this calendar year, up from 14 percent currently, and would slash operating expenses aggressively in a bid to return to profit.

"We are targeting our return to profitability by the end of this calendar year and continued profitability going forward," Craig McHugh, president of Creative Labs, the company's U.S. unit, said during an analyst conference call.
