Microsoft HD DVD Player Exclusively For Movies

Source: Gamerscoreblog
_________
I'm seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no.

Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we’ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD.

If they don't price it right (at the very least, 1/2 the price of a standalone player), then this just became a very useless player for a lot of people. Infact, if Microsoft delays putting out their DVI/HDMI cable any longer, or DON'T put one out, then this is a useless player PERIOD. Especially when HDCP get's instituted in full force.

Price is rumored to be 200$ which would be a very nice price and it's a smart move from Microsoft making the hd-dvd drive an external drive. Not all want to pay the extra 200$ / 300$ for a HD-DVD / Blu-Ray drive with their console (like you are forced to on a ps3).

$200 US? That's actually pretty decent considering that the Toshiba HD A1 sells for around $400-$500 US ($600-700 Canadian) at the moment, and that's the cheapest of the 2 units.

NOW I'm more interested in getting one.

Yeah I think it's a fair price since you are only buying the HD-DVD drive in a case with a USB cord and not an entire computer, like the Toshiba HD A1. Toshiba HD A1 includes motherboard, cpu (pentium 4), some other digital signal processors, HD decoder from Broadcom, 1 GB ram, 256 MB flash and 32 MB flash memory.

The price alone for the optical drive in Toshiba HD A1 is actually 200$ according to clever people

and soon they will be cheaper but sorry to say HD DVD is the stadard that
will be "takeing off" / be more popular due to things like price and availability
not to mention the craze is HDTV craze...blue ray may never be really popular
due to high price VS HDDVD shot of being used a data storage medium for computers.

But when it comes to gameing it's not any better the X360 really so why
pay more? the price for the PS3 is outragous for any console you can build
a good gameing PC for that, and be leaps and bounds better off...
