Get Back Your Lost Files: File Recovery Software

Read More/Source: ExtremeTech
_______________
Of course, prevention (in this case read "backup") is the best medicine when it comes to lost files, whether as a result of disk malfunctions or your mistakenly deleting them. But for those of us with less foresight, there's utility software that can save our skins when it comes disappeared files. Today, we investigate three leading software products that claim to be able to find and recover files you've deleted or lost to a bad disk drive or media: iolo technologies' Search and Recover 4, Executive Software's Undelete 5, and Digital Photo Recovery 2.0.3 from Galaxy.

While I was backing stuff up for an XP re-installation a few months ago, I accidentally deleted all my emails form outlook express - some very important ones that I had not backed up yet. It was more than 1GB of stuff..

I have had a freeware program on my HD for a couple years called "restoration". You don't even install it, you just run the program. I was able to use it and get back every single email file and restore them into OE.

In the read-me it just says " Restoration Version 2.5.14 5/14/2002"

Maybe there is later version, not sure..

The version history in the read-me:

[Update History]
Version 1.7.3
Added Windows NT/2000 support.
Added vacant clusters scan and all clusters scan function.
Version 1.8.12
Fixed two bugs concerned with reading specific extended dos partition
or hidden partition.
Version 2.2.12
Added folder restoration function.
Added NTFS partition support.
Fixed a bug concerned with reading specific removable disk.
Version 2.5.6
Added comlete deletion function.
Added support of disks with non 512 bytes sector size such as FAT32
DVD-RAM.
Fixed a bug concerned with non-residet attribute list attribute of
NTFS.
Fixed a bug concerned with reading specific FAT32 partition.
Version 2.5.14
Fixed a bug concerned with folder restoration of FAT partition.
(The error occurd from Version 2.5.6.)

I'm sure it must be around somewhere.. not sure where I got it though- but it works and it's free.
