DH Review: VapoChill LS (with Conroe X6800 & FX60)

Read the review here
______________________

Asetek sent us a new Vapochill LS for review, so we decided to test it with Intel's baddest Conroe, the Extreme Edition x6800 and AMD's FX60 to see just how far we could get the processors to over clock.

Could we push the 2.93ghz conroe to over 4ghz and get it stable? read on to find out.

Another danish quality product

Anyway it's really nice and a easy solution for those who want to play with extreme cooling. Personally i wouldn't buy it, because it's not silent enough for me and way to expensive if you compair with other more normal cooling solutions.

I have to say, i'm a complete silence freak when it comes to PC's i hate noisy products...i'm also a complete cheapskate.

Some components once you've tried them can be exceptions to the rule though and the Vapo is soooooo much fun and allows such great performance (very few other cooling solutions get you even close to 4.1ghz on a X6800) that i dont mind the cost or the noise.

I couldn't live with the noise, the last 10 years all my primary PC's has been almost completely silent, it's way way important to me

But maybe if some gave me a vapo i would use, but i doubt i would buy one

Seriously, you are wrong... just ask Zardon, i was like you... the amount i've moaned to him about noisy components over the last few years has been huge. With a component like this you accept that downside because of all the benefits you get instead.

Guess its a dont knock it until you've tried it situation.

Nice review on a sweet unit. They're definitely nice to have for speed freaks but there are setbacks. The most important is that you have to keep the cpu under load at all times to prevent condensation -with something like SETI or Folding@Home- or you can kiss that cpu goodbye very soon. Also you do notice it on your electric bill hehe

I seem to recall a site that sold pre-modded Lian-Li cases for use with the VapoChill....but I could be wrong there....ah well....that's what dremels are for!

I've been monitoring the condensation level on this unit, checking regularly and the foam padding mixed with the thermal paste applied properly and the heating elements combine well to pretty much stop condensation forming anywhere near the CPU. I've had this unit running for about a month now on both the FX-60 and X6800 and not had any problems yet... even when running it idle for hours on end (as i frequently do).

I think that if you were to not follow the instructions from asetek well then its possible to run into probs (e.g. not puting paste on the cpu pins) ... but so far so good...

Nice review as always Stuart! And about condensation I believe that Aseteks approach with the foam pads, dielectric grease and heating pads pretty much minimizes the risk of condensation. The prometeias is another story though, according to their manual and everything it wasn't needed (the grease), neither did it say anything about keeping the system under load at all times. I managed to kill my beloved Northwood 3.0ghz a couple of years back with it, damn I loved that CPU it did 4.35Ghz under the Prommie....until it suffered "Death by condensation"

Conclusion page has been updated with a new overclock we achieved tonight.

"Since the publication of our Vapochill LS review we have been busy tweaking away in the BIOS of the Intel D975XBX and as of today have achieved a new highest over clock on our Core 2 X6800. The Vapochill LS is the only cooling solution which has been able to get above 4Ghz on this CPU and this result makes the system an even more worthy winner of the Driverheaven Gold Award. Below is our latest screen shot showing the CPU at 4236Mhz."
