Nortel considers licensing production of WiMAX base stations to Taiwan makers

Source: Digitimes
_______________
Nortel Networks is considering to license production of WiMAX base stations to Taiwan-based companies in order to fully utilize the technological advantage that Taiwan-based makers have in the wireless networking industry, according to Jackson Wu, president of the Greater China region, Nortel.

Nortel is also expected to release its orders for its own-brand WiMAX handsets to Taiwan-based makers, at the earliest, by the end of this year, the Chinese-language Commercial Times stated in an August 22 report.

Taiwan handset makers, including High Tech Computer (HTC), Asustek Computer, Inventec Appliances and Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry), are competing to win the orders, which may include WiMAX PAD phones and WiMAX/GSM dual-mode models, the paper indicated.

In related news, Nortel's WiMAX lab in Taiwan, which Nortel set up in cooperation with National Taiwan University (NTU). will begin field-testing of IEEE 802.16e-compatible products by the end of September, noted Wu, who indicated that volume production of 802.16e products are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2007.
