I would love to hear about the noise it creates. When running on normal power, does it make any noise or is it only when it's on battery or charging
I'm looking for a UPS, but it has to be silent when "not in use"

I dont see why not. It has 2 outlets that are just surge protected and not tied to the battery backup part.

I really need to get one of these soon.. Damn lightning around here sneaks up on you.
Last week I think it was a lightning strike that had something to do with a HD failure.

Same thing here. . .when the wind blows, the power cuts off for a split second, and for my MCE box (which is in S3 when not in use), those power drops were bad. . .corrupted my audio and video drivers.
So, I ran out and finally got an APC unit pretty cheap. . .$69.

What model? How does it work as far as the USB port and windows control etc? Is it a driver or something that always runs in the background?

I got this one. It has USB monitoring that runs in Windows' native power management applet (so you can tell it to initiate shutdown when battery is down to 5%, etc).
Works great, and is wall mountable. I just took down my surge protector and slapped this up in it's place. Oh, and if you get one, DON'T install the software, Windows handles it just fine.

Oh that's cool that you don't need to install software.. that's what I was worried about most.
So it says 450 watts.. I have a 550watt PSU.. I wonder if I need a bigger UPS than that? I bet even at startup my PC doesn't draw any where near 550 watts though. So that should be ok I guess.

Well, I didn't buy it picturing myself using Media Center while on batteries (with my stereo & HDTV!), it's really just to protect it from brief power drops, and to allow it to shut down properly for longer incidents.

Yeah that is what I would use it for too.. Just my PC, Speakers, and monitor plugged into it I guess.. Enough to use it for a couple minutes in case a power failure, enough time to shut down properly. Mostly I want it for the same thing, minor power fluctuation protection, etc..
