Samsung announces world’s slimmest and lightest combo drive

Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its SU-408 CD-R/DVD-ROM combo drive for notebooks. Company officials claimed it is the lightest and slimmest optical drive to date.

The SU-408 is 9.5mm thick, 25% thinner than drives generally available in the market, and weighs 145 grams, 35% less than the 220 grams for conventional models.

The company also said that a power-saving motor reduces power consumption by 20% and a new design reduces noise and vibration levels. Samsung has applied for more than 50 patents worldwide in connection with these new technologies.

The company revealed that the unit is in production right now. However, the introduction date and shipment volume projection are not available at this time. In addition, the new combo drive will sold with notebooks and will not be sold separately in the consumer market.
