Source: DailyTech
________ Bigfoot Networks has finally shipped its KillerNIC gigabit "gaming" network adaptor. The final price? $280 according to Newegg. The KillerNIC M1 has a 400MHz dedicated networking processor with 64MB of PC-2100 DDR memory integrated onto the card. |

Already on my list of things to buy.
I got a chance to fool around with one of these before they got released, and by God, it does work. Where I was once getting an average ping of 80-90 on oversees servers, with this card I was getting 40-60. I couldn't believe it. Plus, zero CPU overhead. Simpley amazing. A couple other thins is that you can directly hookup a USB device to the card (can't remember if you need the PC on or not for it to work). Basically, hookup an external hard drive, and you can redirect all downloads to that drive through the NIC, bypassing the OS. Not only that, but you can run apps from the card, such as running an on NIC firewall, FTP server... you name it. 'Course, this card is the LAST thing on my list of parts to buy. So by the time I do get it, hopefully it'll have dropped in price.. substantially. |

The only problem I can see with this card, is people with SLI setups don't have an extra PCI slot that is available to them after you add a decent sound card.
That's my only concern, we need better MB layouts to take advantage of all these new products. What will happen when those new AI cards are released, we already know the Physics cards are not really worth the trouble so they don't count

They've said they will not be doing this, because of the increased latency in PCIE, IIRC.

![]() ![]() If by "they" you mean Bigfoot Networks, I can't understand why they would say that. PCIE slots are almost 2x faster than PCI slots (PCIE being 250mb/s, PCI at 133mb/s). Plus, PCI slots force all PCI devices to share that 133mb bandwidth which increases latency due to devices having to wait to use the bus. PCIE slots, on the other hand, are actually dedicated point-to-point connections which can scale their bandwidth, and should infact reduce latency. I don't mean to knock what you're saying, but it seems to me that the opposite is true. Like I said, I can't see why they would say that for. Do you happen to have a link to where they discussed it? |

I think there is a latency problem on pci-e, because it's the same reason why Creative haven't made a X-Fi PCI-e card.
Anyway i would like to see this card being tested against a good Intel og 3com network card, just to see if a good 3com or Intel card isn't just as good, when comparing CPU usage and FPS in games. I dont give a crap about the "ping optimizer" features as i have a good 8mbit line and only play on servers here i Denmark. Anyway i would properly buy it to, but not before it goes near 170$. |

it also "masks" yer ping
![]() if your ping is 40, you can "mask" it so that everyone else in the server thinks you have a ping of 80 or so

From what I got to try out it's actually a great card, with great promise. However, anyone with an nVidia 590 mobo are probably feeling a little bit of deja vu. Why? Cuz there are 4 features of their boards that sound awfully familiar: FirstPacket (bottom of the page), Dual Net, Teaming, and TCP/IP Acceleration.
A taste of FirstPacket: "As part of the overhaul of the networking features found in the NVIDIA nForce 500 Series, FirstPacket is a packet prioritization technology that allows latency-sensitive applications and games to effectively share the upstream bandwidth of their broadband connection. Essentially this technology allows the user to set network data packets for applications and games that are more latency sensitive with a higher queue priority for outbound traffic only." One of the reasons I've put off buying the Asus P5W DH as I want to see how their P5N32-SLI SE board does, and if all this fancy network stuff actually works. |
