What began as a spat over strategy and leadership on the board of the Hewlett-Packard Co. has devolved into a sordid tale of corporate infighting, in which false pretenses were used to obtain the phone records of reporters and directors.

When HP's leaders hold a special meeting today to discuss the scandal, they will have to figure out how such a storied firm could find itself in a situation where board members were investigating one another -- along with members of the media -- and where illegal tactics may have been used to do so.
