Samsung Unveils New World-First Memory Chip

High-precision machines of Samsung Electronics etch circuits with 40-nanometer (nm) technology, roughly one-3,000th the thickness of a human hair, on the face of silicon wafers.

The wafers are cut into numerous pieces to make 32-gigabit (Gb) memory chips. Each thumbnail-sized chip has the capacity to store data equivalent to 16 years of a 40-page daily.

That's a little information about the 40nm, 32Gb NAND flash memory, which the world's foremost memory chipmaker yesterday unveiled for the first time at its annual press conference in Seoul.

Samsung President Hwang Chang-gyu, who has spearheaded the development of the revolutionary chips, said they are a harbinger of the new era of ``Flashtopia.''
