In a country where fatal coal-mine accidents and underpayment of employees are chronic problems, these images hardly portrayed the worst working conditions in China.

But this was not any factory. It was where iPods are made. The photos and an accompanying article published in a British newspaper in June struck a chord among some fans of Apple's music player, spawning debates on the Internet about how well the workers who assemble the ubiquitous machines are treated.
