Amazon.com's A9 search engine has made a major retreat in the market, dropping its toolbar and personalized services, and resorting to a stripped-down interface.

In a press release issued late last week without much fanfare, Amazon.com said it was launching a "new look and focus" for the search engine. That new focus led to the online retailer dropping many of the services that differentiated the site from rivals Google, Yahoo and others.
