Thieves steal 7,000 D-Link broadband routers
Source: The INQ
___________ Over seven thousand pieces of D-Link's Broadband Router and Adaptor bundle, or the DWL-922, have been nicked in the UK, while on their way to the firm's European Logistic Centre. D-Link reckons that the stolen kit is being sold on the open market, which has the firm just a little bit miffed. If you're a stealthy sort with a good memory, you can identify one of these products by checking out the model number on the bar-code of the box. A nabbed box will read DWL-922/E as a model number and have 790069285479 as the UPC Code. We thought we'd found a stolen one, but the UPC Code was 790069285478. |

Forgive me if I am wrong BUT, doesn't each pice of internet gear contain it's own unique Address and isn't it possible to find these IP or Mac codes once the are connected to the Net? Or is that a little harder than it sounds? or not possible at all?

hmmm yeah if DLINK has a record of the MAC addresses of the stolen adaptors (not sure if routers have these too?) then it might be possible to trace if the ISPs and police work together

Routers do have a MAC, but most equipment today you can actually change the MAC.
They could track them through the ISP, but only if they would be used as the first device between the ISP and the user or else the ISP can't see the MAC addresses. |

YEah, I was just saying I understand that the ISP wouldn't be able to see the MAC if the device is used within a private network which it certainly would be...oh well good score for them then...how are they gonna move 7000 routers? -possibly already had a buyer that's why they did the job....who know's...

Yeah, like stealing drugs. Except I don't think 7,000 routers would do what 7,000 units of drugs could do...
