Nvidia bans overclocking

Source: The Inquirer

NVIDIA told all of its partners that it simply won't allow the overclocking of G80 cards. It doesn't want another Geforce 7900 GT overclocking fiasco that caused a too high return rate for the cards.

Then they have to compete on cooling solutions then, but I'm guessing XFX isn't to happy about this

Yea, overclocking is their business.

Weird, just when ATI is considering allowing overclocking...
I remember Hercules pulling out of video cards business when they were told only reference design is allowed. This is bound to stir other reactions like that.

All those cards didn't break because of overclocking, they broke because of poor design. The 7900GTX cards didn't work at default speed.. I know, I had to send one back, the replacement has always been unstable too, I will probably end up sending this one back as well, I've just been waiting because it's going to suck having to go without it for 4 weeks or so while I wait for the replacement that I have to pay EVGA to ship to me.

Zeph is an unknown quantity at this point

This makes me happy. Cooling solutions will most likely be the way to establish a dominance over the rest of the pack. The G80 needs it, as well.

Its a power issue, the memory and gpu can take a lot more than they are allowed to. Increasing the power to the GPU and mem should take of the problem but Nvidia is probably too scared to risk it.

I got a reloaded one that had that issue fixed.. I have extra transistors on my card that the old one didn't have.. Still not too stable though, I have tested my CPU and mem extensively for up to 30 hours at a time with zero errors. I think I just got a bad one though, and most of the reloaded ones are fine, it also has different brand memory. my 7800GTX factory OC which consumed more power always ran completely stable though.. so I know it's just the card.

Probably a good call. Gives the product a bad name when 3rd parties push the limit and fail as is often the case.

i think it just means that nV won't allow "factory overclocking"

It's just a 3rd party sort of thing. You want to personally overclock and take the risk it's your choice.

Nvidia not allowing factory overclocking and the amd-ati merger should not make you happy.
It sounds to me like you are in some sort of business to screw the consumer just as these two companies are doing. This overclocking rule is going to really hurt the thirdparty manufacturers.
