Sony profit plunges 94% amid battery ills

NEW YORK - Sony reported a 94 percent drop in earnings for its second fiscal quarter ended in September, as it coped with a large-scale battery recall and struggled in the production of its PlayStation 3 game console.

The steep decline in earnings - following a return to profitability the previous quarter - is the harshest blow yet to the Japanese electronics giant as it tries to regain its footing under its first foreign chief executive, Howard Stringer.

Does this mean Sony might die off in consoles and batteries? Is Microsoft going to dominate then? =(
