Vista system may need more memory, Dell CEO says

Source: SeattlePI
________
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Vista computer operating system may need double the amount of main memory recommended by the world's biggest software maker, Dell Inc. Chief Executive Kevin Rollins said.

"I think they tell you maybe 1 gig of memory is OK," Rollins said Thursday at a speech at Shanghai's Jiaotong University, referring to Microsoft's recommendations. "No. Two gigs of memory would be great."

What about the games? It looks like 4GBs would be ok.

4 gb? Will be paying more for the memory than the video card at current memory prices. This vista will not be a cheap upgrade.

I really don't understand where people are getting their numbers. I ran Vista on two machines, one with 1 gig of ram and another with 2. 2 gigs of ram was more than enough for vista to run games as well as any number of tasks. 1 gig was pushing it a bit, but it still did all the tasks that a normal word processing, emailing computer that most workplaces use just fine. I don't really understand this 4 gigs of ram business personally. Maybe in a few years, but not immediately.

2 Gig is enough and with those RAM prices we are having today, it's no big deal... well unless you need to have the latest PC8500 CL4 :P

We're really excited about the entertainment and productivity experience that Vista promises for customers. Just to clarify the memory offered in Dell systems - all of our consumer notebook and desktop PCs start at a minimum of 512MB of RAM. High-end systems such as XPS start at 1GB. However, the real benefit to working directly with Dell for your technology is that customers can upgrade the memory or other components such as hard drive or processor when they configure their computer to meet their specific needs. Customers choosing systems off the shelf must live with whatever hard drive and memory in pre-installed. Customers choice is limited to what sells at the mall, and there's no opportunity to personalize a system for Vista or anything else.

We talk about Vista on our blog at www.direct2dell.com and our portal at www.dell.com/vista.
