Microsoft backtracks on Vista transfer limits

REDMOND, Wash.--Reversing a licensing change announced two weeks ago, Microsoft said on Thursday that it will not limit the number of times that retail customers can transfer their Windows Vista license to a different computer.

On Oct. 16, Microsoft issued the new user license for Vista, including terms that would have limited the ability of those who buy a boxed copy of the operating system to transfer that license. Under the proposed terms, users could have made such a switch only one time.

It's nice to see they actually listened to the consumer, what more, the enthusiast. My hats off to them, lets hope it stays that way.

This is an encouraging development. Maybe I'll buy Vista in one year instead of the two yeara down the road I originally was thinking about.

Naw, its reverse marketing. Make everyone hate you then make everyone happy with what you were planning to do in the first place. This makes consumers think Microsoft actually listens to them.

I think also they wanted to see what they could get away with. Like testing the water before jumping head first.

I know personaly I had no interest in buying Vista anytime soon and when they announced it liscensing I was glad I was making the right decission. Now I feel almost obligated to buy Vista, its weird.

People weren't going to buy it if it was going to be that limiting. It's not that they care about people, they just don't want to lose money because of it. They didn't want to deal with all the piracy it would have spawned. They didn't want to hear people whining about it. They didn't want to endure all the complaints and potential lawsuits against it. They didn't want people to say screw Windows Vista and look for alternatives.

As long as the major game releases are by 99% for the windows platform on PCs, there are no alternatives.
