Taiwan-based Tyan Computer and Chenbro Micom were chosen as component suppliers for a new supercomputer project in Tomsk, Russia, which is expected to become the fastest across not only in the country, but in Eastern Europe as a whole and all countries of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) region, which includes most former USSR republics.
Utilizing Tyan Tempest i5000VF (S5380) dual-processor server motherboards and Chenbro RM11702 1U rackmount chassis, the cluster system is expected to deliver a Linpack benchmark performance of 7.8 TFLOPS ("teraflops," or trillions of floating-point operations per second), according to sources. That would place it over the 60th position in the 27th TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers published in June 2006. The 28th edition of the TOP500 will be released next week at the SC2006 conference in Tampa, Florida.
