Shipping numbers are so useless. They are simply a way to pump up numbers to make something seem like it is doing better than it is. All that really matters are sales to consumers.

Which is ever so slightly more difficult to calculate unless you want every store to report a sale.

good point... but really its still a rough indication of how much a product is selling because if stores aren't selling any they definitely won't be getting new ones

Yes, but the question is how many stores there are. Say each store has 150 DVDs (probably a decent estimate for my best buy at least). That would only require 15,000 stores worldwide. Better yet, lets say each store has 3 of the 110 movies. That would mean you would only need 4,545 stores worldwide. There are 1,100 Best Buy stores. So a few more chains like that in the world could easily reach that number. So it is not infeasible to have zero sales and still have that number. Now obviously they don't have zero sales, and obviously my estimates are not an accurate measure of the stock in all stores worldwide. but my point is that given how many stores there are in the world a relatively small stock could still account for shipment numbers far above sales. For instance the PSP seems to have shipment numbers several million units higher than sales to consumers. And that is hardware, which most stores would not have that many of compared to movies. It is also assuming stores can accurately gauge customer demand for a given format or a given title within a format and not accidentally overstock it, or not have extra stock in the back just in case. So that is not to say the HD DVD sales are poor, what it means is that the numbers are really not a reliable measure of consumer demand. And there are several companies who are in the business of tracking sales of games to consumers, I would be very surprised if similar companies did not exist for movies.
