After a long illness, the groundbreaking home-entertainment format VHS has died of natural causes in the United States. The format was 30 years old.

No services are planned.

The format had been expected to survive until January, but high-def formats and next-generation vidgame consoles hastened its final decline.

Tracking, huge tape easily breakable, tape players deciding they are hungry for tape, taking forever to go to a specific point in the movie, average quality etc etc.

I knew the age of the VCR was drawing to a close when I rented the 4 VHS cassette of Steven King's "The Stand" and all 4 tapes got so hot they were stuck in the VCR. I had to cut each one out with scissors and returned them to the video store like that

the funniest thing ever I belive we've sold I dunno just a few hundred VHS blank tapes in the last few days. Now video comeing on them? yea thats pretty dead. But VHS lives on...

My dad still uses VHS to record tv shows, and I still wish DvDs were nearly as reliable as VHS's and did not skip.

Do average people actually use DVR's to record tv? You know, like non Tivo devices. I haven't looked at DVD recorders in ages they used to be so expensive.

VHS is dead, a gang of cheap DVD recorders were seen leaving the scene of the slaughter.

Mind you, one advantage of the decline in VHS, we now use our local charity shops as a video library... buy a few films for 50p - £2 - then take them back to the same, or another charity shop when done with them.

Mini what? You mean the one that SONY decided to ask so much more for it that the other formats that none bought? How much market penetration did minidisc have? 1%?

My parents have a DVD recorder/VCR. But they don't use it. There is really no advantage for just recording a TV show you missed so you can watch it once. I still use my VCR for the same thing (combo VCR/DVD player). They just got a DVD recorder/VCR because they new they were going to need to transfer their tapes over to DVD and because nobody sells just VCRs anymore.

Minidisk deserved it, so did Betamax, so will UMD, and so will Blue Ray.
