DARPA Grants IBM, Cray $494M for Supercomputers

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded both IBM and Cray four-year contracts worth a combined $494 million to develop machines that provide 100 times the sustained performance of today's general purpose supercomputers and are dramatically simpler to program, administer and use.

In phase III of the High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program, the contractors will complete the development of petascale supercomputers. The goal of HCPS is to produce systems capable of performing more than two petaFLOPS, eventually scalable to four petaFLOPS. A single petaFLOPS is one quadrillion floating point operations per second.
