BitTorrent Inc. Acquires µTorrent
Source: Wired News
________ BitTorrent, Inc., will announce later today that it has acquired µTorrent, a lightweight and efficient implementation of the BitTorrent protocol. The official announcement will come this afternoon, but there are already some posts from Bram Cohen, CEO and Co-Founder of BitTorrent, in the µTorrent Forums. |

Thats shit, Azureus I'm comin' back again! Utorrent was a more efficent client a few months back anyways, most people dont notice how resouce heavy it has gotten recently. Eating ram like its starving, i remeber back in the 1.1 days it use 3-4 MB...Maybe its my system but its been using 30- 40 MB using the 1.6 Client.

I think itll be a good move for them. As utorrent imo hasn't been as efficient as before maybe they will implement a supertorrent
![]() why does that suck?

Just because of the simple fact that they have ties with hollywood, and they were fine how they were, now they are merging and it just sucks!

These guys are getting tired of the pressure and lawsuits and are getting while the getting is good. Everybody has a price. They know like we do that the way things are going file sharing as we know it now will be dead real soon. I am a try before I buy type of person and soon I will be a, I can't try I won't buy type of guy. The minute the entertainment industry started spending way more time, money, and marketing a product than they did producing it is when I decided not to care.
There is nothing but bad that can come from this merger. Simple as that..... |

Utorrent forum thread on subject is mostly negative.
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=17278 Having read and distilled a few other forums, I think I agree with one point. In the preparation of some form of officially sanctioned, paid for and protected download service (the Bram Cohen/MPAA connection), the open source nature of the "Bittorrent reference client" is an embarrassment, with elements of the applicable open source licences limiting the ability to close it. uTorrent has NEVER been open, so acquring uTorrent gives a basis for embedding secret features. Remember, uTorrent also shrank some time ago by using UPX or other code compression (which also aids secrecy).

This has probably been in the works for awhile. The community knew there was something up because there were regular updates almost weekly and then there was no updates at all for quite some time. I'm going to try Azureus for awhile and see where this goes. I hate Java based apps but it seems to be the most stable and the fastest of the remaining torrent clients.
