The European Union is funding a project involving national libraries and digital preservation groups aimed at fighting off a looming "digital black hole."

The black hole in question is the potential future loss of data as file formats become obsolete and inaccessible.

we've been running into that already...

only it's the huge jump that people making every 5-10 years between computer purchases and upgrades. Or longer. Jumping from DOS based apps to Windows xp/vista really screws this all to hell.

In the area i'm in, there are a pile of people using DOS based applications to do there accounting and work. Look, i'm dealing with people on Tandy 1000's and up. Anywhere from the mid 80's to the mid 90's.

Trying to get them working with new stuff is nearly impossible, specially when they refuse to use it and want thier old stuff to JUST WORK on something new.

Makes my job that much more interesting getting these old progs to work, one major issue is getting a damn printer to print through dos.
