Corel aquires InterVideo & Ulead

Source: Corel
___________
We are pleased to inform you that Corel has completed the acquisition of InterVideo and Ulead. You will now have access to the industry's broadest portfolio of digital imaging and DVD video products – along with the award-winning software brands that you know and trust, such as WordPerfect, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Corel Painter, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo, Corel Snapfire, Corel DESIGNER, WinZip and iGrafx.

Corel will place the Ulead and InterVideo product lines within its existing digital imaging product family. This will form a complementary portfolio of digital media software ranging from photo sharing and image editing products to more advanced digital imaging, video editing and high-definition DVD creation and playback software.

and if anyone wondered how the company can stay afloat despite Photoshop wiping the slate clean in that market...this is how

WinZip: functionality licensed by MS and built into windows
InterVideo DVD Player/MPEG2 Codec: licensed by and built into a good 75% of all OEM PCs [Sony, Dell, and HP, if I'm not mistaken, and perhaps Toshiba now too]

Don't forget that almost all electronic products sold, be it printers, scanners, digital/video cameras, whatever it may be, they always come with some sort of basic Ulead product such as PhotoImpact, MovieFactory, MediaStudio, or VideoStudio.

I wonder though if this is the single reason why they did it? Now I'm just wondering if I should still buy it or not. You need a video that supports HDCP any way for it to work.
