DirectX 10 will not take off until H2 2007, AMD executive says
Source: DigiTimes
__________ Despite that Nvidia recently launched its DirectX 10-compliant GPUs (graphics processing units), demand for DirectX 10 graphics cards will not pick up in the market in the first half of the year because of a lack of games to support the technology, according to Edward Chow, AMD graphics marketing director for the Asia-Pacific region. |

I suppose this is the same as nvidia jumping ahead with Sm3.0...on one hand it's pointless but on the other people will buy it for multiple reasons (including having the latest stuff to show off). It appears to work (they're making a shitload) so I can't knock them.

DirectX 10 faces a potential vicious circle, not made any easier by it being Vista only.
1. Needs Vista, and while some will buy new machines or purchase Vista for existing system of adequate capability, Windows XP can probably be expected to remain in the majority until depleted by natural wastage. 2. Needs a DX10 card - currently, this means an Nvidia 8800, though ATI solutions should be along soon. This is currently restricted to the same price bracket as top-end DX9 cards, but fortunately may supercede those as it seems that they can support Windows XP through DX9 drivers. 3. Needs DX10 software - and that pretty much means a dual DX10/DX9 release at the moment, due to the considerations of (1) and (2). Microsoft will HAVE to jump first - the first game they release after Vista, will have to have a well tuned DX10 capability, as well as still being able to run under DX9 on XP, and on DX9 hardware in Vista. That is the other issue, Vista is effectively divided into two platforms, Vista with DX10 hardware and Vista with DX9, while for serious gaming, XP with DX9 hardware is probably the only platform worth optimizing for (though running on DX8 or even DX7 with reduced options would be a plus). I'd call second half of 2007 optimistic, unless mid-range DirectX 10 cards have appeared by then, as the people who buy £400 graphics cards are not going to be enough to pay for the development.

I bet that the DX10 will have rough start. No games supporting it and Vista as the only windows that supports it. I would say that in 2008 DX10 would replace DX9c.

There is at least one 'game" that is ready for Vista/Dx10, and that's Microsoft's Flight Sim X. Lots of us Flight sim ppl are waiting for Vista/Dx10 before we do a GPU upgrade.

I think also Company of Heroes supports it.
I still fail to see why DX10 is not going to be ever available for XP. For me it is now the only reason to get Vista in the next year or two, and it still is not enough. I hope (though I know it won't happen) that MS will release DX10 for XP too.

I think that AAA titles will likely make the switch to DX10 quickly enough, simply because it will provide an edge in visual quality and effects. Others will likely stick to DX9 for the time being. |

Anyways, I'm glad there aren't going to be many DX10 titles for a good long while. It gives a chance for the cards to start saturating the market. |
