PC users not hungry for terabyte drives
Source: DigiTimes
_______ The launch of the Hitachi Global Storage Technology (HGST) 7K1000 one Terabyte (1TB) hard disk drive (HDD) marks a major milestone for the storage industry not only for the capacity of the drive but also for the changing dynamics in the HDD industry, according to market research iSuppli. Later this quarter HGST will launch its US$399 SATA Deskstar 7K1000 for the retail market, which should make it the first 1TB HDD to hit the market. However, it is the second-quarter launch of HGST’s CinemaStar version of the 7K1000 – which is optimized for digital video recording (DVR) applications – that may be more noteworthy. According to iSuppli, the major use for the 7K1000 over the next 5-7 years will not be in the desktop PC market – which is the traditional bread-and-butter market for HDD suppliers – but rather in the consumer electronics and high-end gaming PC markets. The sweet spot for HDD capacity in the average PC remains in the 100-160GB range, said Krishna Chander, senior analyst, storage systems, for iSuppli. So, 1TB drives probably will only achieve a 3-5% penetration rate in the desktop PC market over the next 5-7 years. |

i honestly have no need for anything close to that much space right now. my 400 and 160 give me more then enough space as it is.

I am hungry for terabytes of available space. But not the cost for it.
What excites me more than these drives is the HD-DVD R drives to hopefuly appear soon, and cheap.

I like my 750's mainly because they say Seagate on the top. I won't look at another company no matter what the spec/price.
Likewise, I own 4 of these brutes and FINALLY paid them off....so I'm not looking to upgrade to 1Tb drives anytime soon. |

My problem with 1TB drives is one of fear, thats a hell of a lot of data to lose if your drive goes and you haven't backed it up. I keep all my stuff on smaller seperate drives so if one goes the ompact is minimal...everything on one drive is just asking for trouble.

I think these would interest people with a specific need for large data storage like some businesses and people running hardcore filesharing hubs :P

I don't see what the big deal is between these and 750GB drives, to be honest. It's just the next step up . . . it's not like these are 7500 GB or something.
I'm not impressed by "magic" numbers that have a digit followed by only zeroes, if that's what this is about.

when HD DVD's become popular I can see people wanting multiple terabyte HD's.. What are they, 50GB each? What if someone wants to set up a media center PC with all their collection backed up on a HD for easy playback?
