And the Big News at Macworld is … the iPhone
Source: RealTechNews
_________ Before I say that, it’s interesting how excited people were that he was wearing his turtleneck again. At any rate … Quote from Steve Jobs: “Well today, we’re introducing THREE revolutionary new products. The first one is a widescreen ipod with touch controls” The crowd goes wild. “The second is a revolutionary new mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough internet communications device. An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator…. these are NOT three separate devices! And we are calling it iPhone! bananaman what are you on about battery life for, are you still living in the past or something? I assume you are refering to iPods, which have had awsome battery life for quite some time now, whats more they wont risk that issue again with this amazing device which has just made me wet my pants.
Microsoft's Zune suddenly looks so dated. The iPhone eats everything else alive - http://www.apple.com/iphone/

Really nice "device", Id buy one in a heartbeat if I had the cash. One thing I see that could be extremely irratating, the entire things a touch screen, hows it going to look covered in fingerprints.

having 20 hour battery life on an ipod is fine, but its not fine on a phone. I want a week long battery life. I think battery technology is one of the things that hasnt improved as much as the technology surrounding it in consumer devices. All those colour screens, wireless etc, suck up battery life really quick.
We need a revoluntary new battery that lasts 200 hours with a device like this and weighs no more than current batteries. Give me that anyday over a new graphics card. Lets get some new battery tech ! |

Ah can't say I really notice since I stick my iPod in the dock when it's not in use or the phone in it's charger and have never had problems.
At least Apple are actually pushing phone/pda/mp3 player tech forward unlike all the other companies with their stale devices. |

Aye, I was just saying to a friend I'd expect that next year or at least guaranteed at some point in the near future, I couldn't image them not going for it now this has been announced.

Anyone know who apple use for batteries? I have to admit I was expecting longer battery life than that, anyone know what the standby is? It'd be fine for me working in my office but if you're like bananaman travelling about and saving the world from impending doom it could be a pain.

I love it, the design and software are some killers features.
But they should had included UMTS or HSPDA support with all those nice internet applications. Also the price is a "bit" high and a better camera would have been nice. |

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I like my mobile phones small, basic and without much "in your face" looks. Even if I could afford it now, I would have no reason to get one, I have a mobile phone that I am very satisfied with, even plays mp3s (w810i), and it is small.
How is this new ipod phone much different from other smartphones, including say the XDA series? I am willing to bet someone else's first born baby that the iphone does not have a combined battery lifetime of 5 hours talk time and 16 hours of music playing. Still, if you like your DRM music, get it, it looks fine.

BlueMak your not in the minority that distinguishable position goes to me based on the fact that I don't have a mobile phone and havent had one since 1995
. Whenever anyone asks for my mobile number and I tell them I don't own one I get the look a leper gets when he tells a prostitute to keep the tip. With the above information in mind I can view this from an outsiders perspective and the one thing that I've noticed is how often people these days change there phones. How many people are going to be happy tied to this. |

There you go, I was surprised at the lack of UMTS support. A "bit" high? This is a consumer product, not an executive one (the lack of a real keyboard means it's fairly useless for hard-core emailing) so that's very high.

It's all about the apple design quality, classy style (not everyone likes 1990's mobile "brick" phones) and unbeatable UI simplicity. The product is class and while it could never be perfect it looks like to be a clear cut above the rest, simple as that. Apple haven't become as big as they are in recent years because of Apple fanboys or because they create substandard products...they've got where they are because their products are good.
But of course I noticed this forum is just as full of "Apple-Haters" as a design forum is full of "Apple-Fanboys". My phone phones people and texts, it's probably 3 or 4 years old, my ipod is one of the first gen minis so I don't go for the latest shit when it comes out. However this thing looks very useful and far better than carrying around a pda/phone/camera and mp3 player seperatly which I was doing at one point due to work. |

You can't assume you know 120,000 people, I for one have used apple computers since 1989 when I worked with them in design, and have used them ever since (to varying levels). You need to be able to distinguish a product from a company. I suggest you relax. |

The only nonsense is you claiming I've been extremely rude, extreme, really? I couldn't disagree more. I'm straight to the point and can't be arsed with sensitive people who can't handle a banter. Anyway, just about every thread I've seen here with any relation to apple has had at least one lame attempt to stab at the company for one reason or another. Usually because they're products are popular so it must be all down to the Apple Fanboys. |

ok cool, have a time out then, give you plenty of time to test that apple battery life. While you are doing that you can work out the differences between debating and being an asshat who "can't be arsed" dealing with other people's views and personalities.
So, does anyone else feel the battery life on these devices should be improved? after all its a phone right? what kind of usable time would you feel is acceptable before a recharge? |

it looks so dated when you go to like...ANY other country with cellphone technology. Honestly this is STARTING to get to where phones are in europe (still a ways to go until we reach asian countries in phone tech)
I'm lukewarm about this. Everyone at UW was going nuts over it and im like "meh..." I'm in sorta a unique situation where I own apple products but I don't drink the koolaid. They made nice looking things but honestly every apple product I've owned (bar none) has fallen apart pretty quickly. For the price, that phone better last for friggin ever (but since its an ipod.....probably not)

Was that a fanboy?
Ok I guess some form of intelligent programming should be involved kind of like the power settings profiles on a laptop. User profiles would be a good idea, if you know your going to be away from home for 8 hours then sure let it enable media at the cost of the battery however if your going on a week long business trip then you should be able to disable all media options prolonging the battery life. Im sure that would be a viable option until battery technology advances. On the whole battery thing I can't believe that something along the seiko kinetic idea (watch battery charged by movement, dont put it on your right wrist, mine exploded) hasnt been developed on a larger scale or even solar my casio watch charges itself never needing a battery. |

I still really haven't found anything to replace the original blackberry I have. I get a week out of that with emails on the move, which is really my top priority. It would be extremely boring to the people interested in this device however, just a basic phone with email. Interesting to see how well this apple device sells however. Ill try and get one for review on DH. EDIT: I love lelisevis's ideas ! why on earth don't developers start making new power devices I agree ! |

battery life has got to improve all around. i own a couple of portable things, cd player and camera, and it seems like im changeing the batteries in them every time i go to use the thing.
if i had a cell phone, i would want atleast the very least 72 hours before it needed charging.

I agree, I have a pocketPC and the thing dies after 10 hours even with ordinary use - it means if you go away you end up carrying around a bloody charger.
With all the advances from 2000-2007 you would think battery technology would be far superior than it is. Even laptop batteries, imagine if a company sold a machine with say a 1ghz processor, 1 gig of ram, 40 gig HD, DVD drive, and a nice 14 inch screen that could stay powered for 100 hours. How popular would that laptop be? I would say businessmen would be buying them up in droves. Everytime I travel I see some dude swearing in an airport when he cant find a socket and his laptop dies in the middle of work. |

im honestly very suprised batteries havnt made any real advancments. for the most part, theyre the same as they were the day they were invented. sure, things have changed a bit and a few advances have come forward, but its still pathetic.
i do like the rumors of these new nano batteries im hearing about. something like 50 hours of heavy use and 10 seconds to recharge them back to full power.

Now, I don't know how much they will sell, but I do smell another Ngage. (which btw I did buy). The problem with mobile phones is that people, at least in Europe that I know, change them very often, like every year often. There are exceptions of course. Unless Apple releases a new iphone every year (not hard to imagine actualy), I don't see the iphone to be a success. Most, young, people especialy, want to change their phones often. People that are older might buy iphones but I seriously doubt it that Apple depends on those sales for this phone. That is just me.
for battery life, I used to have a pocketpc that at best it needed recharge every second day, wasn't using it for music much either. I would (if I was looking into getting one) like the iphone to have a battery life of 2 days with normal use. That is about 30min to 1 hour of phone calls 5-10sms and 4-5 hours of music, per day for 2 days.
