CES 2007: HD DVD versus Blu-ray - The porn industry says HD DVD

Source: TG Daily
_________
Las Vegas (NV) - Knowing their audience quite well, the adult entertainment industry holds their annual get together in Las Vegas to coincide with the CES. There is also a very pertinent crossover between the adult and tech industries - porn has a tendency to drive, and be driven, by technology. Which means HD DVD when it comes to high-def.

Quite famously in the war between Betamax and VHS the latter won especially because the adult industry preferred it. If you've been around long enough, you probably remember that the very early home video rental stores were primarily responsible for driving Betamax out of the market. And those stores carried almost exclusively pornographic content.

Although the market environments from then do not really compare to today's home video market, parallels are drawn between the Betamax-VHS battle to the ongoing and escalating fight between Blu-ray and HD DVD. One of the key questions at this year's CES actually is "Which high-def format will win the current format war - Blu-ray or HD DVD?" Surprisingly, it seems that there is no such question in the minds of the adult industry luminaries.

Putting myself through the arduous trek through the floor of the adult expo I did a quick straw poll on, the virtues of HD DVD versus Blu-ray, and the answer from a dozen companies, big and small, including Pink Visual and Bangbros editor-in-chief, is going into a single direction: HD DVD is the preferred format. Period.

why must the XXX industry chose the bad option of things :P

I think that Blue-ray is far better format ...

That isn't really true. People say the porn industry backed VHS vs Betamax. Major movie studios backed VHS as well. Most of the major movie studios back Blu-ray. It won't be the porn industry that decides who wins but the consumer and it is still too early to tell who will win. I would say by the end of the year we will have a clear winner.

Sandok: You prefer HD-DVD now but preferred Blu-ray before. What made you change your mind? I'm just curious, I prefer Blu-ray mostly because there is a greater storage capacity and Blu-ray supports everything HD-DVD supports expect that Blu-ray uses a different interface on the discs.

Okay here are my reasons...

I can easily afford an HD DVD player while BlueRay is way too expensive for my means. In addition, the problem of space isn't that much of a deciding factor... Especially when you consider that write speeds are at 1 or 2 for the moment.

The only that has going for BluRay for me at the moment is that more movie studios back it... But then, pr0n sorta balances it out (okay not really and I never watch that stuff...)

Both will do fine. Big companies backing both and already a plethora of titles out on both. HD-DVD is cheaper therefore its selling more.

Logical.

Wasn't there a news tidbit that the major adult entertainment people had said they were releasing on both formats?

From what i gathered from this article, it seemed that the majority vote at CES was for HD-DVD, but doesn't mean absalutely everyone working that area is going that route.

Still we'll see what ends up happening oventually. I just don't think Blue-Ray is going to be toast, and i don't think HD-DVD is going to be toast either in any short time soon.

I hope one day SOON we will have our crystals without mechanical parts that can store terrabytes and end this whole discs idea.

I like the porn industry. I hope to work there one day soon. They are a formidable force and if they truly support HD-DVD, it is a strong weapon.

I like the larger storage of the Blue-Ray, but I have a feeling the discs will be double the price too. Even so, I support HD-DVD because SONY is very much every few years trying to push a new format, to which they will have at least near absolute control over, which I do not like. The huge success of the betamax and the minidisc show to me that other people don't like their tactics either.
