Source: TG Daily
_________ Chicago (IL) - Mercury Research today released its annual market share numbers for the x86 microprocessor market, which could be considered the icing on an especially delicious cake for AMD in 2006. AMD gained market share year-over-year, while Intel lost. But, AMD faces challenges that may the impact of its growth. In plain numbers, AMD finished the fourth quarter of 2006 with a market share of 25.3%, up more than 8% over Q4 2006, in which the company held 21.4%. Intel, meanwhile, dropped about 3.4% points from 77.0% to 74.4%. |

Hey, AMD had a great run against the P4. Up until the Core2Duo, they owned. But now they need to respond with something that is more competitive with the newer Intel architecture.
Plus, I do think transitioning from Socket 939 to AM2 after so short a time was a mistake. If people have to go out and get a new motherboard in order to get the latest chips, they might as well go for the Core2Duo since it is faster. If it was as simple as upgrading the CPU only, I think more folks would stick with AMD. Maybe at the very least they should be releasing 939 and AM2 chips at the same time so folks can choose if they want to stick with DDR or go DDR2. Just some thoughts. |

I bought a Asrock 939Dual-Sata motherboard for my last computer a couple years ago, this board is just amazing as far as economical upgrades goes. It has both AGP and Pci-E support and 939 / AM2 support. When prices go down I might upgrade to AM2 if I feel like it without having to upgrade my motherboard.
Considering I paid like 50$ for it, thats just amazing value. Kinda odd there werent more models like that released from other brands. |

How did it know about AM2 two years ago? If you got a link, I'd like to check out the board... Thanks EDIT - I found it via Google search - an AnandTech article. Pretty impressive. I'll dig more into it later on, but it does look intriguing. |
